Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly
Caring for the elderly in Kibera with love, dignity and Support.
KDCCE is led by Kibera native Yasmin Aboyo, and serves elders in Kibera older than 60 who may not be afford to meet their basic food, housing or healthcare needs. Most KDCCE participants live off of $15 USD or less in monthly income. Every Tuesday, KDCCE volunteers prepare and serve nutritious community meals at the center—feeding between 50 and 100 older adults and offering a safe, social space to gather. For elders who are homebound: trained volunteers conduct home visits, bringing medication, therapy, emotional care, and help navigating local healthcare systems. With any additional resources, KDCCE runs additional activities for elders like handicrafts skills training and literacy classes.
The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) supports adult literacy education tailored for older persons in Kibera—many of whom, either never had access to formal schooling or wish to refresh their minds. These classes create a nurturing space where elders can learn reading, writing, and basic numeracy in a setting that honors their life experiences.
More than just acquiring skills, this program is about restoring confidence, enhancing independence, and fostering community belonging. Education becomes a tool for self-expression, informed decision-making, and renewed social engagement—whether reading a letter from a loved one or participating in group discussions.
By supporting literacy in later life, KDCCE reinforces the belief that learning has no age limit, and that every elder deserves the chance to grow, feel seen, and be celebrated.
At the Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE), care doesn’t stop at the center’s doors. The Home Visits Program was created to ensure that immobile or bedridden elders are not left behind.
Through regular visits, a dedicated team of volunteers and staff brings companionship, emotional support, and essential services directly to the homes of older persons who can no longer attend the center in person. These interactions go beyond physical care—they are lifelines that restore dignity, ease loneliness, and reaffirm each elder’s place in the broader community.
This program is grounded in the belief that every elder deserves to be seen, heard, and held in care, regardless of their mobility or circumstances.

The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) runs a vital feeding program that addresses food insecurity and malnutrition among older persons living in Kibera. Serving between 30 to 100 elders weekly, the program ensures that aging does not come with hunger or neglect. Through thoughtfully prepared meals that honor both nutritional needs and individual preferences, KDCCE offers more than food—it provides dignity, routine, and a space for social connection. For many, these meals are a lifeline and a moment of joy shared with peers.By recognizing nutrition as a fundamental right, the feeding program not only nourishes bodies but also strengthens the emotional and communal bonds that keep elders feeling valued and cared for.
At the Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE), maintaining physical well-being is just as important as nurturing the mind. The Exercise for the Elderly Program offers tailored muscle exercise sessions designed to enhance strength, flexibility, and mobility among older persons in Kibera.
These gentle exercises and stretching routines are crafted to meet the unique needs of elders, focusing on promoting balance, mobility, and reducing the risk of common age-related ailments. Regular participation helps elders maintain fitness, improve mental health, and enjoy an active lifestyle well into their later years.
By prioritizing physical activity, KDCCE ensures that older persons continue to thrive—living not just in the comfort of care, but in the empowerment of their own bodies.

The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) believes in the power of intergenerational bonding, where younger members of the community learn from and care for their elders. This initiative fosters a deeper connection between the younger and older generations, encouraging mutual respect and shared understanding. Through volunteering opportunities, mentorship programs, and community events, KDCCE creates a space where young people not only offer their time and care but also gain wisdom, insights, and life lessons from the elderly. This exchange of knowledge and affection promotes community cohesion, breaks down generational barriers, and enriches the lives of both age groups.
The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) is dedicated to advocating for the rights and dignity of older persons, ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve. Through consistent advocacy efforts, KDCCE works to influence policies that improve the quality of life for elders in Kibera and beyond.
By raising awareness, engaging with policymakers, and fostering community support, KDCCE amplifies the voices of older persons, challenging societal narratives that marginalize them. This program strives to create an environment where the elderly are not only cared for but are also respected, empowered, and actively engaged in shaping policies that affect their lives.
In Kibera, growing older often means growing invisible. This densely populated area of Kenya is one of the largest informal settlements in the world. Most residents live in poverty, and public services are limited or unreliable. While many organizations in Kibera focus on children or working-age adults, older people are rarely included in programs—and are often left to fend for themselves.
Over 10,000 Kibera residents are elders. Many live alone, without family nearby. Some are bedridden or too weak to leave home. Others spend their days searching for food or simply waiting for someone to check in. With no regular access to healthcare, therapy, or social support, aging in Kibera can mean extreme loneliness, declining health, and a slow disappearance from community life.
