Empowering and Caring for the Elderly Since 1989
The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) was founded in 1989 and registered the same year with the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizens Affairs, and Special Programmes. The organization was established to address the growing concerns of neglect, abuse, and violation of rights affecting elderly individuals in Kibera and other informal settlements in Nairobi.
Our Beginnings
Operating from a modest space donated by the local administration within the Kibera DC compound, KDCCE became a safe haven for the elderly, providing a space where they could gather, receive care, and find support. From the very beginning, our goal has been to advocate for the rights of older persons, ensure their well-being, and foster a sense of community.
Growing to Serve More Elders
Over the years, KDCCE has expanded its services, directly supporting between 150 to 250 older persons per week. Our programs address not only physical needs but also emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.
- Weekly Meetings & Activities – Every Tuesday from 9 AM to 1 PM, elderly members come together to engage in social, educational, and therapeutic activities.
- Feeding Program – Providing nutritious meals to combat malnutrition and food insecurity.
- Home Visits – Supporting bedridden and immobile elderly persons with care, companionship, and essential needs.
- Spiritual Nourishment & Therapy – Offering guidance, religious services, and wellness activities to ease loneliness and promote inner peace.
- Livelihood Skills Training – Equipping older persons with basic skills to enhance their independence and self-sufficiency.
- Advocacy & Rights Protection – Strengthening the voices of the elderly through Older Person Associations (OPAs) and Older Citizen Monitor Groups (OCMGs) to push for policy changes and better representation.
A Legacy of Love and Commitment
For over three decades, KDCCE has remained a pillar of hope in Kibera, ensuring that aging is met with dignity, respect, and support. Our commitment continues to grow stronger, driven by the belief that “Old is Gold.”
