Isolation and Neglect Among Homebound Elderly Individuals
Many elderly individuals in Kibera face loneliness, neglect, and lack of essential care due to immobility caused by age-related illnesses, disabilities, or frailty. The challenges they encounter include:
🔹 Social Isolation: Being confined to their homes means they miss out on social interactions, leading to depression, anxiety, and a sense of abandonment.
🔹 Lack of Essential Services: Some elderly individuals lack caregivers or family support, making it difficult to access food, medication, and hygiene services.
🔹 Poor Health Monitoring: Without regular check-ups, many suffer from untreated illnesses, worsening conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and high blood pressure.
Without intervention, these issues reduce the quality of life and dignity of older persons who have contributed so much to their communities.
KDCCE’s Home Visit Program
The Kibera Day Care Center for the Elderly (KDCCE) has established a home visit program to ensure that elderly individuals who are bedridden or unable to visit the center still receive care and support. This program includes:
🤝 Regular Companionship – Volunteers and staff visit elderly individuals at home to offer social interaction, reducing loneliness and emotional distress.
🍽️ Food and Nutrition Support – Where possible, meals and essential food items are delivered to ensure proper nutrition.
🏥 Basic Health Check-Ups – Volunteers monitor the well-being of older persons and assist with connecting them to healthcare services.
🧹 Household Assistance – Some elderly individuals receive help with small household chores to improve their living conditions.
🙏 Spiritual and Emotional Support – For many, prayer, conversation, and encouragement bring comfort and a renewed sense of belonging.
By bringing the care to their homes, KDCCE ensures that no elderly person is forgotten or left to suffer in silence.
